I live in this heavily wooded area with houses spaced somewhat far apart, and the house sat on a dirt road. It wasn't rare to have a moose or a bear wander into or through the backyard. I had a rough day at work and wanted to let off some steam by going on a walk with my dog.
It was late in the evening on one of the first days of October. It was about 9 o'clock and the sun had set hours ago, so it was pitch black. No stars could be seen and everyone knows to be inside by this time. It hasn't snowed yet and it was just starting to gather a chill for winter. That meant bears were still out roaming around getting their final meals in before winter sets in. I just wanted to get up and go, so I grabbed a leash and went on my walk. I left the flashlight and bear spray in the arctic entry.
Since it was so dark, I carried my phone in my hand, with the flashlight on. I didn't listen to music and kept an ear out for any odd sounds. The dirt, lampless street transformed into pot-hole ridden pavement with a single lampost sitting on the far end of the road. It was a speck in the dark. I told myself I would just go as far as the street lamp and head back. My dog walked alongside me, happy to be out and about, and was sniffing around.

He would warn me if something appeared, hopefully. He was just a puppy and was scared of his shadow most of the time. Such a big baby for a big dog. We kept walking, the gravel crunching under my feet and I was about 30 yards from the lampost. The old light flickered, once then twice.

My dog froze in place and refused to move closer. I looked from my dog to the lampost. Eyes scanned the trees looking for any nightlife when I saw it. In the shadow of the lamp pole was a tall lean figure, covered in shadows. I couldn't make out any features and the proportions seemed wrong.

The head too big, limbs too long and too tall to truly be human. It was just standing there, not moving. I didn't want to go any closer and neither did my dog. I called out, whoever it was, knew I was there. Who's there?' They didn't move.
I stood there waiting for an answer with my dog pressed against my legs. The lamplight flickered once and the being had moved. It seemed closer and yet farther away at the same time. I could see less of them.
Any possible movement is hidden in shadow. The light flickered again and it was gone.
They either slipped into the tree line or was somewhere nearby. I didn't stick around to find out. I wished I hadn't called out that night and just ran home.
There was something else in the woods besides bears and moose.
